Roger Vivier

Roger Vivier (1907–1998) was a French design architect who had practical experience in shoes. His best known creation was the Stiletto heel.

Vivier has been known as the “Fragonard of the shoe” and his shoes “the Fabergé of Footwear” by amounts of commentators. He planned excessive lavishly designed shoes that he depicted as figures. He is credited with the outline of the first stiletto heel in 1954. Stiletto heels, the slender high heel, were unquestionably around in the late nineteenth century as various fixation drawings confirm, yet Vivier is known for resuscitating and creating this rich style by utilizing a slight bar of steel.

Ava Gardner, Gloria Guinness and The Beatles were all Vivier clients, and he planned the shoes for Queen Elizabeth II for her crowning liturgy in 1953.

Vivier planned shoes for Christian Dior from 1953 to 1963. He utilized silk, pearls, globules, bind, appliqué and gems to make exceptional improvements for his shoes.

In the 1960s Vivier likewise planned silk-glossy silk knee boots plot in gems, and thigh-high night boots in a dark flexible weave with Beads. His best plan was, the Pilgrim pumps with silver buckles (worn by Catherine Deneuve in the film Belle de Jour) got worldwide reputation and numerous impersonations.

There are currently three shops in the US, all planned by Lena Pessoa. The most recent opened inorange County, CA in May 2012. Vivier’s shoes are on presentation at the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto and the Musée du Costume et de la Mode at the Louver.

The brand is possessed by Diego Della Valle from 2003.
